Kitchen Renovation Costs in Auckland: A 2026 Guide

Mid-range and high-end kitchen ranges for Auckland, the GST question to ask of every quote, and what changes when the kitchen is part of a bigger renovation.

Budget $35,000 to $60,000 excluding GST for a mid-range kitchen renovation in Auckland in 2026, and from about $90,000 for high-end work, with bespoke kitchens going past $120,000. These are indicative market ranges. Joinery, stone, appliances and whether any walls come out decide where your kitchen lands.

We renovate kitchens and bathrooms in Auckland, often as part of a wider renovation, so this covers the kitchen on its own and the kitchen inside a bigger job.

Mid-range or high-end: where is the line?

In Auckland, a mid-range kitchen runs about $35,000 to $60,000 excluding GST, and high-end starts around $90,000. In between sits a broader mid band that reaches about $90,000 once stone benchtops and layout changes come in.

The difference is rarely one big item. A mid-range kitchen usually keeps the existing footprint, with board joinery, an engineered benchtop and standard appliances. A high-end kitchen changes the room around it: custom joinery to the ceiling, natural stone, integrated appliances, a scullery, and lighting designed into the joinery. Bespoke kitchens, with hand-finished timber, specialist hardware or imported appliances, pass $120,000.

Check whether every quote includes GST. Two quotes for the same kitchen can look far apart when one includes it and one does not, and cost guides (including the figures here) often quote excluding GST. Then check what each quote covers: joinery only, or benchtops, appliances, plumbing, electrical, tiling, flooring and the building work around them too.

What does taking out a wall add?

Wall removal and layout changes can add $20,000 to $80,000 to a kitchen in Auckland. A non-structural wall is mostly linings, services and making good the floor. A structural wall needs an engineer, a beam sized to carry the load, new posts and footings, and building consent.

Moving the sink, cooktop or island also moves plumbing, drainage, gas and extraction, each with its own trade and cost. At Rawhitiroa in Kohimarama, structural walls came out and steel beams went in to enlarge the kitchen and dining. That is the top of the range for layout change, and it shows what it buys: a kitchen that belongs to the whole ground floor rather than a room off the hall.

Joinery, stone and appliances: the big three

After layout, joinery, benchtops and appliances drive most of a kitchen budget, and each one sets the standard for the others.

  • Joinery. Custom cabinetry built to the room, with full-height doors and good hardware, is usually the largest single line.
  • Benchtops. Natural stone costs more than engineered surfaces, and thickness, edge detail, waterfall ends and sink cut-outs all add.
  • Appliances. An integrated fridge, a steam oven or a ducted rangehood changes both the appliance cost and the joinery around it.

Kitchens inside a wider renovation

A kitchen done as part of a bigger renovation often costs less for what you get than a kitchen done alone, because demolition, services, consent and trades are already on site. It is also the chance to fix what a kitchen-only job cannot touch: the flow to the garden, the dining space, the light.

At Remuera, a new white kitchen was planned as part of the living space, opening through full-height sliders to a covered outdoor room. At Challinor in Mt Albert, a bungalow renovation brought kitchen, dining and living into one space opening to a deck and saltwater pool. If the new kitchen needs new space, our house extension cost guide covers the per-square-metre side.

How do you keep a kitchen budget on track?

Make the expensive decisions first and in writing. Layout, joinery, benchtop and appliances should be chosen before the price is fixed, because allowances left open at signing are where kitchen budgets drift. A modest allowance for a benchtop that ends up as a thick natural stone slab is a variation waiting to happen.

  • Choose appliances before the joinery is drawn. Integrated appliances set the cabinet sizes, and changing them later means remaking doors and carcasses.
  • Plan lighting and power with the joinery. Under-cabinet lighting, appliance circuits and island power need to be in the walls and floor before the linings go on.
  • Agree how variations are priced and approved. Small changes add up quickly in a room full of trades.
  • Hold a contingency, larger in an older house, where what sits behind the old kitchen is unknown until it comes out.

Changes after the joinery is ordered are the most expensive kind. For how we run a kitchen from drawings to handover, see bathroom and kitchen renovations, or Talk to Finn about the kitchen you have and the one you want.

Common questions

How much does a kitchen renovation cost in Auckland?

Indicative 2026 Auckland market ranges put a mid-range kitchen at about $35,000 to $60,000 excluding GST. High-end kitchens start around $90,000 and bespoke kitchens pass $120,000.

Are kitchen prices in Auckland quoted including GST?

Not always, so check every quote. The indicative 2026 mid-range figure of $35,000 to $60,000 is quoted excluding GST, and comparing it with a GST-inclusive quote will mislead you.

How much does it cost to remove a wall for a new kitchen?

Wall removal and layout changes can add about $20,000 to $80,000. A structural wall needs an engineer, a beam and building consent, which puts it at the upper end.

Do I need consent to renovate a kitchen?

Not for a straight replacement in the same layout, but removing a load-bearing wall or changing structure usually needs building consent under the Building Act 2004.

What makes a kitchen high-end rather than mid-range?

Custom joinery, natural stone, integrated appliances and layout change. Together they take a kitchen past the roughly $90,000 mark where high-end work starts in Auckland.
